FOURTH SUNDAY YEAR B
(Racial Justice Day)
27th/28th January 2018

Dear Parishioner

Today's first reading, from the book of Deuteronomy (18:15-20), recounts God's promise to raise up a successor to Moses - a promise Christians saw as ultimately fulfilled in Jesus. But Moses cautions the Israelite tribes to listen with careful and wise discernment to those who claim to speak with the authority of the prophetic office, to be clear in their own minds and hearts that a 'prophet' speaks the authentic word of God.

The Responsorial Psalm 95 invites God&s people to worship at the beginning of the day. This we say every morning O that today you would listen to his voice! Harden not your hearts in the Liturgy of the Hours.

In the second reading from 1 Corinthians 7:32-35 Paul reminds the Christians of Corinth that the business of life should be free from anxiety. Whether married or unmarried their undivided attention should be on the coming of the Lord. (Parousia)

In the Gospel from Mark (Chapter 1:21-28) the evangelist draws a contrast between the scribes and Jesus, who teaches and acts with the authority traditionally associated with a prophet, a 'Holy One of God'. For each one of us our Christian way of life is an encounter with the person of Christ.

In our daily prayers ask God to guide us in doing his will. Amen.

Deacon Kevin
