PALM SUNDAY YEAR B
24th/25th March 2018

Dear Parishioner

Today we begin Holy Week in which we celebrate the Mystery of our Salvation in Jesus Christ. These final days in the earthly life of Christ begin with his triumphal entry into the Holy City, Jerusalem. The liturgy of Palm Sunday too begins with this joyful entry into Jerusalem, the procession with palm branches. These branches are not simply blessed objects, but signs of joyful participation in this procession and an expression of the faith of the Church in Christ. Later during the Liturgy of the Word, we listen to the account of the Passion from Mark's Gospel (Mk. 14: 1 - 15: 47.) The great suffering of Jesus is made clear in this account, and it is from the depths of that suffering that hope and light come once more into the world. Christ is presented as the saviour on the cross. The Roman centurion is the first to give words to the new reality which has appeared: this man is the Son of God.

As we begin this final week of Lent I encourage you all to take part fully in the liturgies. On Wednesday we have the Mass of Chrism at Brentwood Cathedral (7pm). This liturgy is focused on our sharing in the mission of Jesus Christ. Those who have been ordained to the priesthood share in a particular way in the ministry of Christ, for the building up of his Body, the Church. At this Mass, which is celebrated by Bishop Alan together with the Priests of the diocese, Priestly promises are renewed. Please pray for them as they make their commitment to this service. The Bishop blesses the Oil of the Sick and the Oil of Catechumens and the consecration of the Chrism. If you have never been, I encourage you to attend. The blessing of the Oil of the Sick takes place before the end of the Eucharistic Prayer and the blessing of the Oil of Catechumens and the consecration of the Chrism take place after Communion. At the end of Mass the Deacons distribute the sacred oils to a member of each parish in the diocese.

I encourage you to stay watching before the Blessed Sacrament on Maundy Thursday until midnight. On Good Friday we have the children's Stations of the Cross. Please parents do come along with your children (11am). The example of the faith from their parents means so much to them. Please note we have Tenebrae on Good Friday and Holy Saturday at 9am.

On behalf of Fr. Sabu and I, may this special Holy Week bring you and our parish family many blessings.

God bless,

Deacon Kevin
