TWENTY-EIGHTH SUNDAY OF YEAR B
(Day of Prayer for Prisoners and their dependants)
14th October 2018
Dear Parishioner
Today's readings remind us that we do not possess anything in our life that we refuse to surrender to the Lord.
The first reading advises us to use the God-given virtue of prudence and to seek true wisdom in preference to vanishing
realities like riches or political and social influence.
The second reading warns us that we are accountable before God as to how we use our blessings and that the "living
and effective word of God" must be our guide in evaluating the use of our blessings.
In today's Gospel selection (Mark 10:17-30), we find three sections: Jesus reminded the rich man of the
commandments that deal with relationships with other people and challenged him to sell what he had and to give the
money to the poor. Jesus shocked his disciples with this challenge to the Jewish belief that material wealth and
prosperity were signs of God's blessings.
So let us accept the invitation to generous sharing. Let there be a desire to give in the heart of every Christian.
We all may have something in our lives that serves as a major obstacle to happiness and peace. Let us invite God into
our lives and into our efforts to face and remove that one obstacle to holiness.

members of our parish to this candlelit Mass - there will be an opportunity to light a candle in memory of a loved
one during the Mass. We will provide memory cards, on which you can write your personal intercessions, to hang on a
"memory tree" which will remain on the altar during the month of the Holy Souls. Refreshments will be

ST JOHN PAYNE CATHOLIC SCHOOL SIXTH FORM OPEN EVENING will take place on Wednesday 31st October from

MASS INTENTIONS What does it mean to have a Mass "offered" for someone? An individual may
ask for a Mass to be said for several reasons; for example, in thanksgiving, for the intentions of another person,
for a special occasion or for the repose of the soul of someone who has died. The special fruits of the Mass benefit
the priest who acts in the person of Christ in offering the Mass and to the people who are in attendance. You may ask
Fr. Sabu to offer a Mass for a special intention. A stipend is given which thereby in justice creates an obligation
which must be satisfied. The guide amount for a Mass stipend is £5-£10 or as much as you wish to donate.
Deacon Kevin.
