TWENTY-NINTH SUNDAY OF YEAR B
(World Mission Day)
21st October 2018

Dear Parishioner

Today's first reading is an excerpt from Isaiah's fourth Servant Song. The Servant offers his life in atonement for the sins of his people. His death will be the beginning of glorification for him and a source of blessings for others. By reflecting on passages such as this, the early Christians came to an understanding of the saving sufferings and death of Jesus.

In the Gospel we see how far the apostles are from this spirit of self-sacrifice. James and John want the top places in Jesus' kingdom. Obviously they thought that his kingdom would be modelled on worldly kingdoms, where those in high places enjoy honour, power and glory. But Jesus tells them that his disciples are not to imitate the Gentiles, whose rulers lord it over people. In his kingdom, service is what makes one great. He would set the example himself. He came 'not to be served but to serve, and give his life as a ransom for many'. Authority in his Church must wear the unmistakable livery of service.

Today is World Mission Sunday which is your chance to support missionaries and our Church in proclaiming the Gospel of hope to those who suffer around the world. By supporting Mission, the Pope's official charity for overseas mission, you will be sharing the love of Christ with all people by helping everyone in need, regardless of background or belief. Today, your prayers and donations will help build a future of hope in missionary countries. Our Holy Father, Pope Francis, says 'never lose hope; continue to believe, always, in spite of everything. Hope opens new horizons, making us capable of dreaming what is not even imaginable.'

Please pray for me as I pray for you.

God bless,

Deacon Kevin.
