SECOND SUNDAY OF LENT (C)
17th March 2019

Dear Parishioner,

On this Second Sunday of Lent, in the first reading from the book of Genesis we learn of the solemn covenant God made with Abraham which was the foundation of God's relationship with the people of Israel. Through Christ we are the heirs to this covenant. To ratify a covenant, the contracting parties cut an animal (or animals) in two and walked between the divided parts, invoking the fate of the animals on themselves should they fail to observe the terms of the contract. Since God's covenant with Abraham is unilateral, only God (symbolised by the furnace and the torch) passes between the pieces. The birds of prey symbolise the forces hostile to Israel. This covenant led to the covenant at Sinai, and culminated in the new and eternal covenant which Jesus sealed in his own blood on Calvary.

The chief significance of the Tabor experience was for Jesus himself, and this is what Luke emphasises in the Gospel reading. The incident was meant to confirm him in the course he had taken. It comforted him to know that he was travelling and was marked by the feet of prophets such as Moses and Elijah. The transfiguration also benefited the apostles. It prepared them for the passion, death and resurrection of Jesus, the Messiah.

Today we celebrate the feast of St. Patrick, the man who heard the Irish call. We offer our prayers and love to all parishioners who come from the emerald Isle. On Tuesday, 19th March, we celebrate the solemnity of St. Joseph. A simple village carpenter, Joseph, the husband of Mary and guardian of the child Jesus, has become the guardian and patron of Christ's universal Church.

During this holy season of Lent I encourage you to attend a weekday Mass and the Stations of the Cross on Fridays at 7.30pm. And Holy Hour on Sunday from 4.00pm to 5.00pm.

St. Patrick pray for us. St. Joseph pray for us.

With every blessing and prayers,

Deacon Kevin.
