TWENTY-SIXTH SUNDAY OF YEAR C
29th September 2019
Dear Parishioner,
The readings for this Sunday remind us of our duty towards the poor and the less fortunate members of the society
wherein we live.
In the first reading prophet Amos reminds Israelites that God will judge the complacency of the people and their
leaders. Riches make people forget their duty to the poor and live in luxury. God will not forgive this.
In the second reading St. Paul reminds Timothy to pursue righteousness, devotion, faith, love, patience, and gentleness
and to compete well for the faith. Paul exhorts Timothy to stay faithful to God in all things.
A major theme in the Gospel of Luke is the importance of the care of the poor in the life of discipleship. In the
parable found in today's Gospel, Jesus contrasts the life of a rich man and the poor man. Jesus observed that the
actions of some Pharisees betrayed misplaced priorities: they spoke one way, but acted in another. The story of the
rich man and Lazarus demonstrates the importance of the care of the poor and is a reminder, to those who would follow
Jesus, of the unimportance of wealth in the eyes of God.
The very practical expression of today's gospel can be on the family fast day (October 4) where we remain in
solidarity with the poor and share our fortunes with them. Let us be generous to the needy.
SEND, O LORD: HOLY APOSTLES INTO YOUR CHURCH
